About Resting Metabolic Rate
Your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest to maintain basic physiological functions like breathing, circulation, and cell production. It accounts for about 60-75% of your total daily calorie expenditure.
How is it calculated?
This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation, which is considered the most accurate formula for estimating RMR. When you provide your body fat percentage, it uses the Katch-McArdle formula which can be more accurate for lean individuals.
What is TDEE?
Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is your RMR multiplied by an activity factor that accounts for your daily movement and exercise. This represents the total calories you burn in a day.
How to use this information?
- Weight loss: Consume 300-500 calories less than your TDEE
- Weight maintenance: Consume calories equal to your TDEE
- Weight gain: Consume 300-500 calories more than your TDEE
